British guitar player MIKE COOPER has established himself in the past decade or so as an international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. His roots and inspiration range freely through traditional country blues, folk, original songs, free improvisation, pop songs, exotica, electronic music, electro-acoustic music, and ‘sonic gestural’ playing. Mike Cooper was the guest of RUPTURES to talk about his two concerts in Beirut, on May 24 at EM Chill (along with Scrambled Eggs, Beirut’s punk/experimental rock musical activists), and on May 26 at Beirut Art Center. Cooper was accompanied in this interview by Lebanese musician Sharif Sehnaoui.

One of the first and foremost Lebanese artists operating in the field of electronica today, JAWAD NAWFAL has held live appearances in Lebanon and France, and regularly collaborated with Lebanese electronic musicians (including TRASH INC and dubstep project INDEX/LEFT). He has released 3 albums of ambient electronic music between 2006 and 2008 on Lebanese label Incognito, under the name Munma. He was the guest of RUPTURES to present his 4th album “Previews & Premises”, a collection of tracks recorded by Nawfal between 2006 and 2010. Not exactly a compilation, not exactly a concept album either, this new release was accompanied by a live concert at The Basement, on May 14, which marked Munma’s first “solo” appearance on a Lebanese stage since 2007.

Published by Amers Editions, Beirut, Lebanon
Untitled Tracks: On Alternative Music in Beirut is a collection of texts and photos which begins to chart the manifold, mutating and increasingly visible alternative musical landscapes in Beirut. Through a generous series of photographs taken from Tanya Traboulsi’s ongoing project Music is Life, as well as reflective texts on topics such as the melancholy sound of Soapkills, the politics and relevance of noise, and the interference of genres, this publication investigates the resonances of music and noise in the organized chaos and politics of everyday life.
Contributions by Serge Abiaad, Seth Ayyaz, Rayya Badran, Charbel Haber, Nizar Mroueh, Ziad Nawfal, Ghalya Saadawi, Walid Sadek and Kaelen Wilson-Goldie.
