In the framework of cultural forum Home Works 6,
taking place in Beirut, Lebanon, from May 14-26, 2013

The Ruptures radio program will host a series of interventions by Lebanese art research project 98weeks,
every Monday between May 27 and June 17

Project description:

OUR LINES ARE NOW OPEN: A RADIO SERIES

On the Poetics and Politics of Language

A collaboration between 98weeks, Lawrence Abu Hamdan and Nora Razian in the framework of Home Works 6

May 18-22, 2013

Our Lines Are Now Open is a series of interventions that aims to look at reading and writing in its different forms, using radio as a means of exploring the poetics and politics of language. The series will be launched during Home Works 6, lasting four days in an abandoned storefront facing 98weeks Project Space. The program in this temporary radio production house looks at the tension between silence and speech and explores questions such as:

What happens to language when violence provokes the act of speaking? When nation building silences a language or creates a new one? How does language shape our relationship to the future? How can we think gender through literature? How can words be smuggled, banned and recreated?

Each day will see live audience participation through a studio visits and phone-ins.
As well as being able to listen online and participate live, each of our events will also be produced as short 15 minutes radio programs, edited by Rayya Badran and Lawrence Abu Hamdan, and broadcast through Ziad Nawfal’s “Ruptures” show on Radio Lebanon 96.2 FM.

ABOUT THE CD

The Ruptured Sessions is a series of live recordings produced by Lebanese radio host Ziad Nawfal in the studios of Radio Lebanon. The sessions take place during Nawfal’s weekly program Ruptures, with musicians from Beirut’s alternative scene and elsewhere.

Volume 5 documents the city’s younger wave of electronic composers, and features performances from the likes of Jad Atoui, Liliane Chlela, Mocques and RadioKVM. Also included are recordings from American experimental musician Robert Lowe (in his Lichens guise); up-and-coming international projects Praed and Under The Carpet; as well as an exclusive duo of Lebanese guitarist extraordinaire Charbel Nicolas Haber and Canadian sound-maker Radwan Ghazi Moumneh.

The sessions for Volume 5 were recorded in Beirut by sound engineer and musician Fadi Tabbal; and subsequently mastered in Berlin by Belgian artist and producer C-drík, who also worked on Ruptured releases El Rass and Under The Carpet.

Ruptures ‘German Edition’, RL 96.2FM (August 2006)

It took me some time to post this radio program, but the thing is, well… I had lost it. Blame it on the time I had recorded it, and the circumstances surrounding that time, but I simply forgot to label it, and it was buried amidst a compact mass of similarly non-labelled CD’s. Hell, I tell you… But in any case, now it’s here, in its full and pristine form….

In May 2006, German radio Zündfunk contacted me to produce a radio program, approximately 80 minutes long. Zündfunk is the “young” radio show of Bayerischer Rundfunk, which is the Southern branch of German Public Radio (i.e. something like the German version of the BBC).

The show, due for broadcast in the summer of 2006, was meant to be a music program, i.e. a radio DJ mix hosted in English by myself, presenting information on bands, DJs or projects relevant to the underground musical scene of Lebanon, as covered by Radio Lebanon.

When the war with Israel started raging in the summer of 2006, at the time when the program was meant to be sent to my German correspondents, it (the show, and the music contained therein) took on a whole new meaning and dimension, evidently, and became a real labour of love for me. This was my homage and tribute to the young musicians whose music kept me going during these dark days.

Sending the CD’s to Europe was an accomplishment in itself, one I must thank Serge Abiaad for… Cheers to him, as well as all the bands and artists featured in these 80 minutes.
