Ruptured News // MUSIC FANZINE Vol.2 with Ziad Nawfal // Papercup


The selection of songs on the cassette accompanying MUSIC FANZINE vol.2 comes from the first vinyl albums I bought and liked. I asked my brother Jawad to transfer the songs from vinyl to digital, and then from digital to tape. A tortuous process, yes, but I’m very happy with the final result.

For the unlucky ones who do not own tape players anymore, here are the two sides of the cassette in digital form, for easier listening access. There were several songs which did not fit on the cassette, so I added them here as well. A bonus selection, so to speak. Enjoy!

Ruptured Live // Ghosts In The Machine // Art Lounge

Save the date! On Saturday, September 25, will be held the first edition of ‘Ghosts In The Machine’, an event incorporating live musical performances, DJ sets, and visuals (VJ’s and others). To kick off this celebration-of-sorts in style, we will present the premiere projection of live electronic band Munma‘s first-ever video, ‘The Alchemist’, conceived and directed by Damoun Ghaoui.

‘Ghosts In The Machine, edition one’ will also feature the first live performance in Lebanon (and anywhere else, for that matter) of one Jad Atoui, the younger brother of famed Lebanese electro-acoustic musician Tarek Atoui.

Untitled Tracks: On Alternative Music in Beirut is a collection of texts and photos which begins to chart the manifold, mutating and increasingly visible alternative musical landscapes in Beirut. Through a generous series of photographs taken from Tanya Traboulsi’s ongoing project Music is Life, as well as reflective texts on topics such as the melancholy sound of Soapkills, the politics and relevance of noise, and the interference of genres, this publication investigates the resonances of music and noise in the organized chaos and politics of everyday life.

The first CD to be recorded in the studios of RADIO LEBANON 96.2FM, during the RUPTURES radio show… Featuring music by the likes of NADINE KHOURI, CHARBEL HABER, YOUMNA SABA, CRISTOBAL, and The INCOMPETENTS… We are releasing the CD, in the presence of the artists, over the course of a unique celebration at our favorite hot-spot, the WALIMAT Restaurant in HAMRA, on APRIL 30, from 5-8pm. There will be wine, food, singing and dancing.

Ruptured Live // XEFM “Man With A Movie Camera” // The Basement

On February 6, 2009, Lebanese experimental rock band XEFM will take to the stage at The Basement, in Beirut, and create a new soundtrack to famed Russian art-house film Man with a Movie Camera. XEFM are no strangers to the Cinemix tradition, as they have already contributed a short piece of music to a Lebanese silent film shown recently at the ‘Né à Beirut’ festival. On this occasion, however, they will tackle an altogether grander task; that of providing a live musical accompaniment to a full-length, celebrated feature.

Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera was created in 1929. This controversial film is an extraordinary piece of film-making, a montage of urban Russian life, showing the people of the city at work and at play, and the machines that keep the city (Odessa and others) going. Shooting shops, traffic, children, coal miners, workers, human bodies, and nature, Vertov creates visual rhymes and graphic portraits of the structure of life and the explosion of perception. It was Vertov’s first full-length film, and he used all the cinematic techniques at his disposal – dissolves, double exposure, fast and slow motion,  freeze-frames, jump cuts, split screens, extreme close-ups, tracking shots, footage played backwards, and animations – to produce a work that is exhilarating and intellectually brilliant, a sublimely fluid vision of man, machine, and society.

The XEFM quartet of Charbel Haber (electric guitar), Tony Elieh (bass), Fadi Tabbal (electric guitar), and Abdallah Ko (guitar and electronics), created on their 1st release from 2008, a superb tapestry of sounds, hovering between ambient electronica and outlandish noise. It should be fascinating to hear them transpose their sound, one that is suffused with Beirut’s urban maze, into 1930’s Russian art-house cinema.
